Ecological Bases for Silvicultural Prescriptions
نویسنده
چکیده
Preparation of s i lvicul tural prescriptions i s a complex process in lodgepole pine ecosystems. Ecological factors and management decisions must be considered. The presence or absence of dwarf mistletoe in a stand i s one ecological factor that must be considered. Control of dwarf mistletoe i s possible through application of sound s i 1 vicul tural principles.

Restoring Old-Growth Southern Pine Ecosystems: Strategic Lessons From Long-Term Silvicultural Research
The successful restoration of old-growth-like loblolly (Pinus taeda) and shortleaf (Pinus echinata) pine-dominated forests requires the integration of ecological information with long-term silvicultural research from places such as the Crossett Experimental Forest (CEF). Conventional management practices such as timber harvesting or competition control have supplied us with the tools for restor...
متن کاملThe Silviculture of Restoration: A Historical Perspective With Contemporary Application
In the southern United States, the turn of the 20th century saw the high-grading of virgin pine stands that left millions of acres of forestland in desperate condition. Some of these southern pine stands now support thriving forests whose patterns and processes resemble those extant before they were cut a century ago, but others do not. The success of this recovery in the southern pinery was ba...
متن کاملFiri?, and Silvicultu . Recent Advances in the Silvicultural Use of Prescribed Fire
Although the silvicultural use of prescribed fire has been researched for almost 70 years, new advances are still being made. These advaace~ are primarily the result of (1) a better under%andktg of fire as an ecological process and (2) the use of this knowledge to restore declining ecosystems, save threatened and endangered species, enhance natural beauty, and regulate composition and structure...
متن کاملContributions of Silvicultural Studies at Fort Valley to Watershed Management of Arizona’s Ponderosa Pine Forests
Watershed management and water yield augmentation have been important objectives for chaparral, ponderosa pine, and mixed conifer management in Arizona and New Mexico. The ponderosa pine forests and other vegetation types generally occur in relatively high precipitation zones where the potential for increased water yields is great. The ponderosa pine forests have been the subject of numerous re...
متن کاملVisualization of Heterogeneous Forest Structures Following Treatment in the Southern Rocky Mountains
Manipulation of forest spatial patterns has become a common objective in restoration prescriptions throughout the central and southern Rocky Mountain dry-mixed conifer forest systems. Pre-Euro-American settlement forest reconstructions indicate that frequent-fire regimes developed forests with complex mosaics of individual trees, tree clumps of varying size, and openings. While it is broadly ag...
